Obama And The Special Olympics

I keep hearing about Obama and his Special Olympics joke. I couldn’t find what it actually was. Everything is an “incident” with him it seems. All my news really comes from the iVote application on my iPhone. I finally found a clip of the “incident.” I mean it’s one thing to make fun of the acne prone teenager who’s suffering through yet another series of bad acne treatments. But it’s something else to make fun of the Special Olympics. I watched, I heard, I wondered. It wasn’t necessarily in good taste or the best thing to say. But he was mostly making fun of himself, and frankly I wasn’t all that offended. I can be easily offended, but try not to be. He was trying to have a sense of humor about his own failures and inadequacies in sports. We’ve all said something stupid like that without thinking. Some of us have said it in our area’s public eye too. But most of us have not been severely reprimanded for something like this. Apparently, Sarah Palin is “outraged” by his comment. Would she have been “outraged” if he said something about teen pregnancy, because that’s a part of her life too. Seriously though, she has done some great stuff for the down syndrome community just as other celebs have done great things for diseases that happen to come into their lives. And frankly, to make a joke more about yourself, I would understand being a little bit irked about the whole thing, but being outraged? Well, I guess certain Republicans will take any chance to attack. But really, shouldn’t Palin be more angry at the Republican party for using her as the scapegoat for McCain’s failed campaign? I am all about protecting the underdog and valid treatments for disabilities and acne treatments and really just about anything. But let’s be honest here. He made a joke in bad taste, and it really wasn’t meant to harm or offend anyone. It wasn’t particularly funny. But if everybody got reprimanded for not being funny, well there would be quite a few people in a whole world of trouble.
